Abstract

This study investigates the impact of online game usage on the learning interest of eighth-grade students at SMP Daerah Hu’u. The increasing popularity of online games among adolescents has raised concerns regarding students' declining motivation and attention in classroom learning. Previous research indicates that excessive gaming may contribute to reduced academic performance; however, studies focusing specifically on learning interest within the context of rural Indonesian secondary schools remain limited. This study addresses that gap by employing a qualitative case study design. Data were collected through interviews, observations, and documentation involving three students who actively play online games, one homeroom teacher, and three parents. The findings show that students frequently play online games—particularly Free Fire and Mobile Legends—both at home and during school breaks. While online games offer minor positive effects such as enhanced creativity and social interaction, negative impacts are more dominant, including diminished motivation, poor focus, neglect of school assignments, reduced study time, and financial misuse to purchase internet data. Teachers and parents reported similar concerns and have implemented strategies such as limiting device usage and providing increased supervision. Overall, the study concludes that online game usage significantly lowers students’ learning interest. Collaboration between parents, teachers, and students is needed to regulate game use and minimize negative effects on academic outcomes.
